Learning Beyond the Classroom Walls
As we move into June and summer, classrooms at Fueling Brains Academy are extending learning outdoors. Fueling Brains teachers are intentionally implementing outdoor learning and risky play experiences to support children’s brain development, confidence, independence, and executive functioning skills. Outdoor play offers rich opportunities for exploration, problem-solving, and collaboration.
What Is Risky Play?
Risky play includes age-appropriate challenges where children explore their abilities while being safely supervised. Examples include climbing, balancing, jumping, carrying materials, and exploring natural environments. Fueling Brains teachers design environments that support manageable risk while reducing hazards, helping children learn decision-making, awareness, and resilience.
Teacher Implementation & Practices
Fueling Brains teachers are intentionally:
- Extending inquiry-based learning outdoors
- Designing provocations using natural materials
- Increasing uninterrupted outdoor exploration time
- Supporting problem-solving instead of immediate intervention
- Encouraging independence, cooperation, and peer learning
Teachers observe closely, document learning, and use intentional language to support reflection and safe risk-taking.
Outdoor Learning Experiences
Children are engaging in obstacle courses, gardening, water exploration, loose parts construction, nature walks, and outdoor practical life activities. These experiences are planned by Fueling Brains educators to strengthen both physical and cognitive development.
Why Risky Play Matters?
Research shows risky play supports confidence, flexible thinking, emotional regulation, coordination, and social skills. Through challenge and exploration, children build resilience and trust in their abilities.
Role of Teachers
Fueling Brains teachers balance safety and exploration by removing hazards, supporting risk assessment, modeling language, and guiding decision-making while still allowing meaningful challenges.
Tips for Families
Families can support this learning at home by encouraging outdoor play in parks, allowing safe climbing and movement challenges, exploring nature together, and providing opportunities for children to take small independence-based risks in everyday routines.
We are excited to continue rich outdoor learning and risky play experiences this summer at Fueling Brains Academy as children grow through curiosity, movement, and exploration.
